Realisation

the morning started with a health dose of artillary sounds and gunfire from the frontlines, firing at the odd scout that got through. He put on his battledress over his sweaty night clothes and went out into the main bunker to sort out whatever mess last night left him.

The artillary fire was too far away from where they were to be of any discomfort, though the odd shell still did land in their lines once in awhile. He quickly went though the reports. Less and less men were getting downed each day as the squad leaders gained experience. It was good.

Suddenly, a loud explosion rose through the air as the last few evacutaion ships lifeted into the air. He sighed but knew that he and his men would not have been able to reach the ships in time even if they had left yesterday. The rambles of the few incompetent soldiers around him continued as the ones he trusted remained silent. He really should get rid of them soon if he were to do anything constructive anytime soon. It would be hard but he trusted that when the time was right he would know it and would carry out the deranking.

As the day passed, nothing of interest happened. Just as he was about to have his dinner however, a stray group of men, wearing the battledress of the enemy entered his room. They looked startled, just as he and his guard were. The guard quickly jumped into action, turning over tables and chairs to be used as makeshift defenses and he jumped behind one table along with a guard and began to return fire.

As he crouched under the table and as the table was slowly being shot away, he wondered at the courage of his brothers fighting beside him and began to think. He knew that the guard would be able to replel the invaders. That was what they were good at and why he chose them to be his personal guard and advisors. He quickly glanced over the table and shot a few rounds to help cover those still without cover.

He crouched back down and began to think if the objective was really worth the lives of his men. These were men that have fought through hell with him and had his back when he had recieved his near fatal wound. They were the ones who were with him though the dark ages. He could not let them perish now, just for a causse that might already be lost.

Just as the enemy were slowly cut down and driven away out of sight, he made up his mind. He would retreat the moment it seemed possible. But, if the scout returned intime with news of a way in and he could devise a plan that would leave no or litle casualties, he might carry on and head for the thing that they had came here for. If not, he would order his men to slip away, using the dark of night as a cover and meet them in the forest, away where no one could see them. He would then contact back command and call evac down to get them out of there. Till the return of the scout, he would just have to move himself and his men to a more secure location that was easier to protect and have the possibility for them to advance.
